Prison Reform
Home / Issues
Our jails and prisons are full. I believe that we should only imprison violent criminals, drug dealers, and habitual offenders. Each prisoner costs taxpayers $30,000 per year; can this expense be justified for non-violent offenders? We need to consider alternative sentencing measures. We also need to allow "faith based" organizations increased access to all of our jails and prisons. Caring individuals in these organizations have been successful in leading prisoners to a better way of life; only 10% of these prisoners will return to prison. This is in sharp contrast to the 70-80% recidivism rate for prisoners without this type of intervention.
